I awoke early morning from my peaceful slumber to a gentle rapping at my door. I stretched out my arms and legs, feeling the pleasent cracks and pops emmiting from my body. I sat up and looked at Mackenzie, who was still sound asleep in her usual starfish-like sleeping position, snoring. I trudged to the door, still extremely tired, as it was probably about seven in the morning. When I opened the door, I didn't find a person, but instead a basket of assorted goods. Being as tired as I was I decided that I'd go back to sleep and look at it later.

When I finally did awake-this time on my own- it was significantly lighter outside. I repeated my previous routine of stretching and cracking everything that I physically could. Just as before, Mackenzie was next to me in her starfish position, however she was now upside down. She also was not snoring, which meant that she was close to waking. I stared at her creepily for about three minutes and when that didn't work, I poked her in the forehead repeatedly. Finally, I decided to stand up and semi-gently kick her in the side. She open her eyes quickly and turned to me. After staring at me for about thirty seconds she reached her fist out and punched me in the ankle.
"What time is it?" She asked while rubbing her eyes and starting to get up. I bent down to retrieve my phone.
"About three thirty-ish." I replied. Looking over at the counter, I suddenly remembered what had happen earlier this morning. "Hey, someone sent us a gift basket. I haven't gone through it yet, wanna go open it?" Mackenzie's head perked up.
"D'you think there's food in it?" She pressed. I gave a small giggle.
"I don't know, but I hope so. All we have left is a bag or two of candy, and I don't really feel like going shopping today..." We walked over to the counter to examine our present. Looking at it while I was actually awake, I found that the basket was a baby blue color and had lots of intricate bows around the base and top. Mackenzie was about to tear it open before I stopped her.
"There's a note attached to it," I pointed out. I carefully pulled the note from atop the basket and read it aloud.
DEAR NEWCOMER,
MY NAME IS MAKA, I AM A STUDEDNT HERE AT THE ACADEMY, JUST LIKE YOU. I HOPE YOU FIND YOUR NEW HOME TO BE CLEAN AND COMFORTING. DEATH CITY REALLY IS A NICE PLACE TO LIVE, AND I HOPE JUST AS NICE OR NICER THAN YOUR HOMETOWN. PLEASE ACCEPT THE GIFTS IN THIS BASKET AS A WELCOMING PRESENT AND SOMETHING TO HELP YOU GET YOUR NEW LIFE STARTED!
SINCERELY,
MAKA ALBARN
P.S., IF YOU EVER HAVE ANY QUESTIONS ABOUT DEATH CITY, OR JUST NEED HELP WITH A SIMPLE TASK, FEEL FREE TO ASK ME FOR HELP. I LIVE IN THE APARTMENT DIRECTLY IN FRONT OF YOU. I HOPE TO SEE YOU AT SCHOOL!
"Well, this Maka chick seems nice enough." Mackenzie said after the reading of Maka's letter. I quickly skimmed over it again before replying.
"Yeah, she does..." I replied distantly, still emersed in the note. Why was I so attached to this simple welcoming letter? Mackenzie began giving the basket sideways glances.
"Only if you open it carefully, and don't open anything without me." I grinned. She carefully untied the bow at the top of the basket and tore the plastic wrap off, causing the goods to spill all over the floor.
"Man, she really packed this thing!" I said thoroughly impressed. After picking up all the treats and laying them out on the island we found that she had actually baked most of the food herself. The basket consisted of two new glass plates, a few forks, knives, and spoons, some homemade chocolate chip cookies, a measuring cup, a bowl full of shredded chicken, bacon (which Mackenzie went nuts over), a small cake that was decorated and read "Welcome to Death City", some pancake mix, oil, cooking spray, and butter.
"Wow," Said Mackenzie as she stared at our loot in disbelief. "Its like she avtually knew that we didn't have food for a few days!"
"Yeah," I replied, also finding it hard to believe how nice someone that we'd never met could be so nice.
We decided that we'd dig into our stash today by making pancakes for breakfast today. Luckily, the mix that she had bought us only needed water and an egg to be made, so we were able to make them without needing to go to the store. After about ten minutes of mixing, defective stoves, and multiple splatters of pankcake batter on each other's clothes, we had made about six pancakes, four for Mackenzie and two for me.
"So," Mackenzie started through a mouthful of dry hotcakes. "What do you suggest we do today?" I looked up thoughtfully at the ceiling.
"I dunno." I sighed. "Take our showers and walk around Death City, I guess." Mackenzie gave an overly loud groan, her voice cracking in effort to make it as loud as possible.
"I'LL take a shower then we can walk around Death City." I corrected myself. Mackenzie have a smile which indicated  that she was pleased with my new proposal.
"Well, you can go stand under the poison rain if you want to." She chided.
"Oh come on," I said. "You grew up in the northwest, you should be used to a little bit of water."
"Whatever." She snorted, sticking her tongue out.
"What are you going to do while I'm 'being poisoned'?" I asked.
"I told you, I'm going to sit here and do nothing."
"No, you're not."
"Who says?"
"I do. You're going to do something." I ordered. "I know, you can text our parents and tell them that we've arrived safely."
"Yes, Sir!" She said with fake obedience and saluting me in a military-like fashion. It was a weird habit of hers.
"You're so weird." I sighed.
"Tell me something I don't know." She grinned. "But you don't have much room to talk." Which was absolutely true. I left her there texting rapidly on her phone. She was sending her parents a lengthy message to ensure that they didn't have a panic attack about anything.
As I walked to the shower, realized the extent of this situation. I was here, in Death City with my best friend, doing what I'd dreamed of doing my entire life. Damn, was I lucky.
The site crashed while I was typing this and I lost everything, so it turned out worse than before... Meh :(
